CERTIFICATE  IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF COMMUNAL HARMONY AND SOCIAL PEACE

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSE AT

The Department of Philosophy

University of Mumbai

Religious extremism have led to communal tensions all over the world in recent years.  India too has its share of social divisions driven by religious extremism.  However, it has also got its cultures of peace as antidotes to such extremism.
 This provokes many questions-
Is religion always violent and divisive?
What constitutes the secular, composite tradition in India?
Is there scope for political responsibility during communal periods?
How are fundamentalists made? How does one unlearn communalism?
Can academics and culture play a constructive role?
What is the relation between theory and practice?

The Department of Philosophy, University of Mumbai will be delving into these questions through its unique, interdisciplinary one year certificate in the Philosophy of Communal Harmony and Social Peace.  This certificate  comprehends the philosophy, politics, sociology and history of communal strife in India and the world.  It also articulates efforts made in the direction of social harmony and peace.  Hence, it has  special significance to students who have completed their graduation, activists, journalists and civil servants.   By combining theory and practice with responsible politics this Course endeavors towards constructive citizenship.

The minimum requirement for this course is H.S.C.  in any discipline.  Classes will commence from 5th  August.  Admission forms, prospectus and fee structure are available from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. till July 25th , 2012 the Office, Department of Philosophy,
